City Sightseeing Milan: The Operator Reviewed

City Sightseeing Milan is the operator behind the red open-top double-deckers on the edge of Piazza del Duomo. It is the Italian arm of the City Sightseeing network, working in 14 Italian cities according to its own site, and in Milan it sells more than buses: skip-the-line museum entries, lake day trips and a half-day tour with a Cenacolo ticket attached. What the ticket is and what it costs

The Milan hop-on hop-off product is sold in four durations — 1 day, 24 hours, 48 hours and 72 hours — at €25 on the operator’s own site. Tickets validate on first boarding, then run as rolling hours rather than to midnight, so a 15:00 start on a 24-hour ticket still gives you the next morning. For a three-day trip the 48-hour version is the one that fits.

Included: a seat on the open-top deck, a paper route map, GPS-triggered commentary, and unlimited hop-offs for the life of the ticket. Also included, and genuinely useful, is the free Sightseeing Experience app, with a self-guided walking tour and a real-time bus tracker in English, Italian, French, Spanish and German. If you have ever stood at a stop wondering whether the bus is five or forty minutes away, that is the feature that matters.

The audio guide runs in eight languages — English, Italian, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Japanese and Russian — plus a children’s track in Italian, English and Spanish. It is recorded, not live: nobody on board answers questions. For that you want a guided tour.

Routes and stops

The lines fan out from the Duomo area and cover the sights people find awkward to reach on their own: San Siro / Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in the west, the Navigli and the Darsena in the south, the Castello Sforzesco and Parco Sempione, Santa Maria delle Grazie, Teatro alla Scala and Via Manzoni, Milano Centrale and the Porta Nuova towers.

What the operator does not put in writing anywhere readable is the detail you plan a morning around. Line letters, the stop list per line, the interval between buses and the first and last departures exist only inside the Map and Timetables PDFs linked from its Milan page, and both are drawings with no text in them — we downloaded them on 10 September 2026 and there is nothing to quote. We are not going to lift a stop list from a reseller’s product description instead. The €2.50 gap between platforms is small; the review pools are not comparable — 7,934 on GetYourGuide against 387 on Tiqets for the same bus. Both allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before the selected date, which matters because the upper deck is open and rain turns this into a slow bus.

The night line

The evening tour is a separate product: one circuit on a dedicated open-top line past the Castello Sforzesco, the Navigli, Teatro alla Scala and the floodlit cathedral, at €19 on the operator’s site and on Tiqets, with a multilingual audio guide and no hop-offs. It carries almost no reviews yet, so treat the rating as noise and book it as a cheap, pleasant hour rather than a headline experience. It is also non-refundable on Tiqets, unlike the day ticket.

The rest of the Milan catalogue

Worth knowing about, because it explains why the operator’s own site is sometimes the better place to look. All prices from city-sightseeing.it on 10 September 2026:

Two are genuinely competitive: the San Siro combination if you were going to the stadium anyway (see San Siro), and the outlet shuttle (see outlets and shopping). The Milan Pass at €99 needs the same arithmetic as any pass — check tickets and passes first.

The other operator

Gray Line Milan Open Tour is the alternative, at the same €22.50–25 on both platforms, with a ticket valid on three lines. It adds disposable headphones, on-board WiFi, USB sockets, an on-board hostess and an 11-language commentary including Arabic, Chinese and Dutch. Neither operator is meaningfully better; if the deciding factor is language coverage, Gray Line wins, and if it is the bus tracker, City Sightseeing does.

Where the operator falls short

Three honest weaknesses. Published information: the route and timetable PDFs are the most important documents for planning a bus day, and they are not reliably reachable. Ratings: 3.9 on Tiqets and 4.0 on GetYourGuide are mid-table. Value in Milan: three days of unlimited ATM travel costs €15.50 against €25 for one day on the bus, and the historic core is a 20-minute walk end to end.

Verdict

Buy it for: a first-afternoon survey with commentary, the outlying sights (San Siro, the Navigli, Cimitero Monumentale), hot weather, tired legs and children. Skip it for: getting around efficiently — that is what the €2.20 metro ticket is for — and for anything inside the Duomo–Galleria–Scala–Castello rectangle. Buy it where: GetYourGuide for the lowest price and the deepest reviews, Tiqets if you want the Duomo bundle at 5% off; the operator’s own site if you want the San Siro or outlet combinations.
